Notarize documents

Discuss courseload, upcoming travel, work authorization, or other F-1 issues. Please tell us the exact purpose of your visit and what you want to discuss.

F-1 Student Advising

Bring original Form I-797, DS-2019, I-20, EAD, or other preferred immigration document and a copy of your most recent I-94 printed from https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home. 

I-9 Update

Advice about applying for an SSN or obtaining and SS denial letter. You cannot apply for an SSN without a job offer letter. Please bring your job offer letter with you.

Social Security Number

J-1 Exchange Student Advising

Bring documents for review and signature prior to filing. It is your responsibility to bring all documents with you (old I-20s, Form I-765, advisor letter, etc.)

OPT Advising

Learn what treaties may apply to exempt you from certain taxes and complete necessary forms.

Tax advising

Bring I-983 and other necessary documents for review prior to filing. It is your responsibility to read the STEM OPT section of our website and bring Form I-983, offer letter, old I-20s, copy of your EAD card, etc.

STEM Extension

Discuss extensions, bringing dependents, or change of status options. This appointment is NOT for follow-up questions about when a petition was filed or if an approval has been received. Please indicate the purpose of your visit.

H-1B Employee Advising

Complete Section 1 online via link from your departmental HR BEFORE making this appointment. Bring your original immigration documents with you.

Initial I-9 Section 2 Completion

Drop-in Zoom "office hours" to discuss immigration issues. Zoom link listed in weekly Globetrotter e-newsletter. Do NOT come to Sterne Library for this appointment! :)

SOM Immigration Advising

Come to the ISSS office to collect vital immigration documents you need to prove your lawful presence in the US and continued work authorization. You received an automated email from isss@uab.edu about this.

H-1B Approval Notice and I-9 Update

We can meet with you AFTER we receive confirmation in writing that your department chair has agreed to sponsor you for permanent residence. Strategize re: best route to adjust status. Do NOT schedule more than one of these meetings per week.
